Listed below are the 16 species of hummingbirds that breed in North America. Of the sixteen, only eight are prevalent throughout North America. Of those eight, only the Ruby-throated Hummingbird lives in the East and Mid-west. The other seven all live in the West. The additional eight are mostly seen in small areas of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. For those curious, here is a link to a list of Hummers of the World.

For those of you who live in areas of other species, I have listed the gorget (throat) color of the males. The females can be distinquished from males by their clear or only slightly marked throats and white tip on their outer tail feathers.
